True to its century old commitment to the history of the area, Elmwood gives visitors and families alike an opportunity to research their roots. Should you wish to engage Elmwood’s assistance in tracing your family tree, please do not hesitate to call for an appointment. Some families may wish to perform more extensive research, which may result in a nominal fee. Donations are always welcome.

Elmwood Maps

There are a number of maps, mostly created from the original maps made over 100 years ago. We also have a current map showing the sections within the cemetery here.

Elmwood Manual Registers

At this time, we are digitizing and indexing all the manual registers and other documents related to Elmwood Cemetery, and plan to make them available. Some registers are available now while others will be updated from time to time. If you can not find what you are looking for, please use our “Contact Us” page and we will try to assist with your research.

We have two basic registers – the Lot Registers which show the rights holder(s), and the Burial Registers which are a chronological listing of persons buried at Elmwood Cemetery. They have been digitized in sections and are available on this site.

Find-a-Grave website

You can find photos of many of the grave markers on www.FindaGrave.com. This site is freely accessible and is maintained by volunteers. Over 10,000 images can be found for Elmwood, but it is important that you enter the location as “Perth, Lanark County”. Find-a-Grave data is mostly created from the marker inscriptions and often includes nicknames, second names, maiden names and family relationships which do not appear in our registers. There are also references, taken from the markers, of “In memoriam” names where the deceased is buried elsewhere.

Unfortunately, there are differences in the plot numbering used by Find-a-Grave entries and the cemetery records, as the entries were made independently. Both numbering systems will lead you to the correct area of the cemetery, but do not pinpoint the precise location. Approximately half of the Find-a-Grave records also have a GPS reference and we are working to add more, as well as new photos.

Billion Graves website

The Billion Graves website www.billiongraves.com contains a large amount of data from around the world, but it is quite limited in the Perth area at this time. There are no records from Elmwood and there are very few from nearby cemeteries.
